Our little man is now 2 1/2 years old and it’s a challenge to keep recording his language development! We are seeing him transfer language structures and vocab and use them in a variety of contexts!
One of Carter’s favourite stories is ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’ from the BSL Signed Stories App! This week we went for a walk to the park, as we often do, and Carter made the connection between the bridge and the story!
Mid way through his story he noticed two dogs coming towards the bridge. He signs ‘DOGS WALKING’ and this is the first time we have seen him sign ‘walk’ simultaneously with both hands to indicate the two dogs! He is packing so much more information into what he is saying.
In this clip Zoe and Carter are sharing a book. Zoe naturally uses strategies to gain and maintain Carter’s attention. I have made notes (Closed Captions) throughout this video to show the following
-how Zoe follows Carters lead when talking about the pictures – she signs about what he points to and extends the phrases he signs by introducing new concepts eg ‘dry’
-how Zoe uses gentle tapping and waiting to gain attention before asking a question
-how Zoe moves the sign to within Carter’s line of vision while he is focussed on the book
-how Zoe places signs on the toy train to reiterate the phrase
-how Carter modifies the sign ‘dry’ to add emphasis
-the handling classifiers Carter uses when talking about the bucket and hose
